Carol Jean Young is the author, co-founder and president of the American Students' Fund. Mrs. Young holds a BS degree in music, with an emphasis in piano performance, from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1987, she was appointed to the piano faculty of the preparatory division of The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where she taught for eight years. She now sits on the advisory council of the Peabody. In addition, she maintained a private teaching studio for over 25 years and is a former board member of the Baltimore Music Teachers Association. She has also been active as a volunteer in cultural endeavors in Baltimore that include chairing the 1995 annual Grand Opera Ball for the Baltimore Opera Company, which set a record high for funds raised. She also served on the core committee for the 100th Anniversary Gala for The Peabody Preparatory. Mrs. Young also sits on the board of the Carson Scholars Fund.
Deeply concerned over the growing threat of violence in American schools, Mrs. Young has focused her time and energy since mid-1999 toward the development of The American Students' Fund. In 2000, the Envelope Manufacturers Association (EMA) presented her with a special award for her work in the fight against school violence. Most recently, in the summer of 2007, Mrs. Young was appointed as a board member of the Maryland Center for Character Education.
